About the Therapist

Cheryl Thapa, MSW, LICSW

About the TherapistAs far back as I remember thinking about a career, I was interested in Psychology and the helping profession. One notion about studying this field is that we are really trying to figure out our own families. Admittedly, this was probably what stirred my interest 20 years ago. I have found, however, that this is the most meaningful and satisfying work that I can find. It is a true gift to be trusted and to be a part of others’ life changing experiences.

For more than 12 years I have worked in the mental health arena. I have experience with all age groups and in both outpatient and inpatient mental health settings, as well as internship experience abroad in London, England. Additional internships, traveling abroad, and other life experiences have deepened my cross-cultural sensitivity. The majority of my career has been spent working in a hospital with adults experiencing severe disturbances in mood, cognition, and functioning. I am happy to provide a resume at your request.

I am passionate about a holistic approach to mental health, highly value research-based or “proven” interventions, and find myself balancing these with simplicity and practicality. I am married with two children and enjoy growing and learning with them. I enjoy bike rides, traveling, reading, cooking, baking, and meditation practice.

About the Therapy

The Canvas

What people have intuitively known for years about the value of a trusting and positive relationship, brain science is now confirming. Our brains, and frankly I believe our spirits, grow and thrive in healthy relationships with others. We may find this from anyone in our lives, or we may find this in a healing therapeutic relationship.

For me, the relationship with clients is of primary importance. It is the canvas on which the client creates the masterpiece and the therapist provides the medium and guides the technique as needed for the desired outcome. The approaches I utilize are well founded by research and are natural means of accessing healing opportunities from a strong body-mind-spirit perspective. I honor practical solution-focused approaches as well as deeper, insight-based processes. Specializing in individual and group psychotherapy, I enjoy working with adults and adolescents and will work with you in the context of your family when needed. I specialize in counseling and treatment of recent and chronic trauma-related symptoms (from combat, abuse, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, losses, etc.), depression, postpartum depression, anxiety, phobias, grief and loss of any sort, job or relationship related stressors, and other disturbances in mood and functioning.

Our work together will start by getting to know each other, coming to a common understanding of present day concerns, and a mutual commitment to the therapeutic journey which will be tailored to your unique needs and goals. We may design the plan together, but you are the creator and director of the experience. There is never a one-size fits all approach to counseling. It is my humble honor to be permitted a part of your life experience and a part of your healing. It is a special gift to witness the rediscovering of your true self. Perhaps the self that you’ve been missing lately or have not had the opportunity yet to discover.
